MUTEMWA RIVER LODGE

UPPER  ZAMBEZI  RIVER ZAMBIA

At Mutemwa Lodge it’s our belief that every Upper Zambezi experience should encompass everything that makes the Zambezi River magical. This includes quality tiger fishing on a remote and private piece of the Zambezi, wonderful bird life, stunning sunsets, a roaring fire at night all complimented by superb  hospitality and great food.

We will catch a commercial flight from Johannesburg to Livingstone in Zambia and then go by vehicle from there to Mutemwa lodge where we will spend the next 6 nights. Mutemwa Lodge is known for its incredible fishing as well as its fantastic birding opportunities.

ACCOMMODATION OVERVIEW

Accommodation at Mutemwa is in permanent en-suite luxury tents on raised teak decks with the expanse of the Upper Zambezi below the decks. The sound of hippo, monkeys, birds and feeding fish surround you as you awake to the sun rising over the Zambezi River.

In addition to tents, Mutemwa Lodge comprises of 6 boats, a sunset cruise barge, canoes, and a beautiful breakfast deck over the Zambezi, main lounge and bar area with a library, electrical charge points, filtered water stations, DSTV television and guest bathrooms and a swimming pool.

DINING

Start your morning off with some Zambian coffee or tea in your tent or around the fire. After your morning activity, guests can return to the lodge for brunch which is usually served on the breakfast deck overlooking the river.

Beach breakfasts are also offered depending on the season.

High tea is served on the deck in the afternoon, before your afternoon activity… after which guests will return to the lodge for a drink in the bar, followed by dinner around the fire.

BIRDING

Superb riverine and woodland bush birding is available and guided walks on islands, through the woodland forests, on canoes in the back waters and by boat make for a diverse birding experience. Specials seen in camp include Schalow’s Turaco, Narina Trogans, African Finfoot and Pel’s Fishing Owl.

Visit Sioma Falls – Also known as the Ngonye Falls, day trips for swims and picnic lunches at Sioma Falls are available for guests staying at Mutemwa Lodge. The second largest waterfalls on the Zambezi, you are unlikely to encounter another visitor on most days you visit. Great fishing is also possible below the falls.

FISHING AT MATEMWA LODGE

The Upper Zambezi River at Mutemwa is wide and varied from shallow rapids and riffles to deep holes (7m+) and eddies. The river offers up islands, reed beds, grassy banks and mud wall drop offs and therefore the tiger fishing is varied and offers something for everyone from drifting a live bait to spinning or fly fishing in the rapids. IMPORTANTLY, we share our stretch of river with only one other small camp and so the water is extremely private and there has been almost no commercial netting on our stretch of the river.

FISHING AT SIOMA FALLS

The Upper Zambezi River at Sioma Falls is deep and churning and the Zambezi River thunders through volcanic rocks creating massive eddies and whirlpools. Tigers love to use the deep water and currents to hunt and there are some enormous tigers waiting in this relatively un-fished water. Fishing can be done off the rocks on the side or by boat.
